Beginner Bread Rolls
Ingredients for Beginner Bread Rolls
2¼ teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
1 cup warm water (not hot—just warm to the touch)
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons melted butter (plus more for brushing)
1 teaspoon salt
350 to 375 grams or 2¾ to 3 cups of Plain flour
In a large bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. It should look foamy or bubbly. If it doesn’t, your water may have been too hot—or the yeast is old.
Add melted butter and salt. Stir to combine.
Add 250 grams or 2 cups of flour. Stir until it starts to come together, then add more flour a bit at a time until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough. Turn it onto a floured surface and knead for about 6–8 minutes until it’s smooth and stretchy. You can also knead right in the bowl if that’s easier.
First rise:
Place the dough back in the bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour—or until it’s doubled in size.
Then punch the dough down gently, divide it into 12 equal pieces, and roll each into a ball. Place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
Second rise:
Cover the rolls and let them rise for another 20–30 minutes until puffy.
Then Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15–18 minutes until golden brown on top.
Optional butter brush:
Brush the tops with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven. It makes them soft, shiny, and extra delicious. Let them cool slightly—and then dig in.
